May 31st, our hearts will stop for a second, the time to come to know the results of the Irish referendum as to whether Irish citizens have accepted the new European Stability Treaty. Actually, I take it back. It will be the day in which Europe will decide on its future.

Il 31 maggio qualche economista penserà, sbagliando, che l’evento del giorno sarà la relazione del Governatore della Banca d’Italia a Via Nazionale. No, sarà il grande giorno in cui l’Europa, tramite il coraggioso referendum irlandese, avrà forse l’ultima occasione di pronunciarsi sulla bontà del nuovo Patto fiscale imposto ai cittadini dei rimanenti paesi europei (tranne Regno Unito e Repubblica Ceca) senza che potessero esprimere la loro opinione.

But we should not criticize the Irish government: its biased information is much more in terms of transparency than the sum of what the other 24 countries have done so far with respect to informing their citizens. You know my thoughts on the evident stupidity of this Pact, but this is not the issue at stake here. What is at stake here is the “real decline of Europe’s commitment to democracy”, like Nobel Prize Amartya Sen said a few days ago, mentioning the ban on Greek citizens to vote on their future.

Voi sapete come la penso sullo stupido Patto, ma non è questo il problema ora. La questione è, come Amartya Sen ha detto qualche giorno fa a Berlino, del “vero declino dell’impegno europeo verso la democrazia”, ricordando anche come al popolo greco è stato di fatto impedito di votare per il proprio futuro.

And so Long live Ireland, that fights its battle on the turf, that in the scrum pushes Europe in defense mode, toward democracy. Whatever the final outcome.

E quindi, viva l’Irlanda, l’Irlanda che vota. L’Irlanda che punta i piedi sul terreno e spinge forte, nel pacchetto di mischia, spinge il team europeo a difendersi, ad arretrare, sì, verso la democrazia. Comunque vada.
